Maryland 16 Hr. Handgun Permit Course

The MD 16 Hr. Handgun Permit course is 14 hours of classroom instruction and two (2) hours of range practice and qualifications for an original application.  There are 6 hours of classroom instruction and two (2) hours of range practice and qualifications for a renewal application. The course includes instruction on state firearm law, home firearm safety, handgun mechanisms and operation, and a component that requires the applicant to demonstrate gun safety and proficiency with a minimum score of 70% accuracy.

Designated security personnel (security guards, private detectives, special police, and armored car drivers/guards) must shoot a practical police course of at least 50 rounds, from no further than 25 yards and score at least 70% accuracy. All other applicants must shoot a course of at least 25 rounds, from no further than 15 yards and score at least 70% accuracy. Items needed for the course are as follows: a positive attitude, a qualifying pistol (rental available), a minimum of 52 rounds of ammunition, eye and ear protection, and target(s).

NOTE:  This course does not include range fees, firearm, nor ammunition.  All items can be rented at the range.
